Cemex raises cement prices 5 pct in Mexico-source
Mexico's Cemex, the world's No. 3 cement maker, raised average prices for cement in its top domestic market by 5 percent from Tuesday, a company source said.
"We are trying to increase prices in line with inflation. The hike will be applied from Feb. 1," said the Cemex source, who requested not to be named.
Cemex , which controls around half the cement sold in Mexico, traditionally increases prices at the start of each year and then adjusts them according to demand. Inflation in 2004 in Mexico was 5.19 percent.
In February last year, Cemex announced an average price increase of between 5 percent and 6 percent. But demand dipped and Cemex had to lower prices. Cemex's average nominal price hike in Mexico in 2004 was 2 percent.
Holcim Apasco, a unit of Swiss-based Holcim and the second-largest cement player in Mexico, is not planning any price increase for the moment, the company's communications director, Gustavo Gastelum, told Reuters.
